The heritage of the past...
The promise of the future.
The Scottsbluff Public Library is a legacy to each generation, offering the heritage of the past and the promise of the future. It serves as a gathering place for all ages and socio-economic groups. There is no question that 13,015 square feet was generous when the library was built in 1966, but times have changed.
"Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation."
-- Walter CronkiteThe 21st Century library is more than just a warehouse for books -- it provides a gathering place for people. The 21st Century library is really a community living room. It is a safe haven for children after school -- a place where teens can interact -- where adults can enjoy a quiet read -- and a place that the entire city can call its own.
Our patrons drive everything we do. As a result of three public meetings in November, 2004, the public spoke and we listened. Scottsbluff citizens emphatically endorsed leaving the library in its current location. By almost tripling the size of the library and updating the facility, we will serve the needs of the community, both present and future.
Scottsbluff Public Library, 1921This vision will be accomplished through expanding the library to 23,010 square feet; the cornerstone of which will be a state-of-the-art children's library. The expansion would also add ample space for books, CD's, DVD's and periodicals, a Teen Zone, a computer lab, several large meeting rooms, quiet zones for individual and group study, a room dedicated to genealogy and historical research and better parking for our facility.
Not since 1965 has our city leadership asked the community to support a library funding project.
Today, the library needs the support of those who recognize the value of a free public library to a vigorous, growing community.
The project will cost $4.1 million. The City of Scottsbluff and the Scottsbluff Public Library Foundation will share funding with additional dollars sought through grants and a capital campaign.

Scottsbluff Public Library Fast Facts
- To a large degree, the Scottsbluff Public Library is already this city's living room. During the 2006 fiscal year, the library averaged 421 visitors per day with some summer days reaching more than 1,000 visitors per day.
- In 2006, the children, teen and adult reading programs registered 2,089 readers.
- The same year, the library presented 219 programs for all ages and ethnicity with 15,030 people in attendance.
Our staff has the knowledge, ability and willingness to do more; however, we need the support of citizens with foresight who want to help the library serve this community into the 21st century.
We hope you will join us as the Scottsbluff Public Library moves forward into the next exciting phase of its life.
