Groundbreaking, at last! It has been a long time coming, but it is here at last. The journey to this point was sometimes torturous, frequently heartwarming but always gratifying. Hundreds of volunteers and donors, a dedicated staff, Board, Foundation and Friends and more people to thank than I could ever believe…you are all thanked from the bottom of my heart for your hard work and dedication. The Lied Scottsbluff Public Library will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on February 23, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. We invite our whole community both inside and outside of Scottsbluff to help us celebrate this occasion.
Library and city staff met with the architectural team and the general contractor February 4th to determine the construction schedule for the expansion and remodel of the library. The contractor hit the ground running this past week. The construction schedule is aggressive. Plans are for construction to begin this coming week, and groundbreaking is scheduled for February 23rd. In the best of all possible worlds, construction will be completed by September 21st. Then after another month, we will be open for business in our newly expanded and remodeled library. My head is spinning!
The library will remain open on site for the entire construction schedule, except for two weeks in July. During those two weeks, we will auction some furnishings, box up the entire library, empty out the current facility and move into the new addition while the old building is gutted and remodeled. This will be quite a feat to accomplish in two weeks, but we definitely do not want to hold up construction any longer than necessary. A scaled back summer reading program is being planned.
Construction is messy and loud. We beg the indulgence of our neighbors during the coming year. The contractor realizes that the library is located in a residential area and promises to use due diligence to make this process as painless as possible for the neighborhood. You are good neighbors to us, and we want to be a good neighbor to you.
Our groundbreaking will be during the school day, but I want to extend a special invitation to children and teens. You helped get this done. This is your celebration too and could not have been accomplished without your help.
Mark the date and the time—February 23, 2010 -10:30 a.m. Come rain or shine we are breaking ground for the construction of the new and improved Lied Scottsbluff Public Library. Refreshments served following the ceremony.
