Gardens, Weddings and Skin - Bev Russell, Library Director

(This column appeared in the May 21, 2010, Star-Herald)

Spring has sprung and my mind turns to gardening, weddings and skin. (Well, not really but I needed an opening line for this article.) Here are a few books on those three topics

“Perennials for Midwestern Gardens: Proven Plants for the Heartland” by Anthony W. Kahtz. I was all excited about this book until I looked at the map. On the map the Midwest only extends to Iowa. I am going to have to see if the author has written a book that includes Nebraska. Anyway, this attractive book includes color photos in its encyclopedia of perennials and gardeners will find many perennials that will also grow in our climate out here. More than 400 plants are recommended. They are grouped into 140 descriptions, arranged alphabetically by botanical name.

“Bulbs in the Basement, Geraniums on the Windowsill: How to Grow & Overwinter 165 Tender Plants” by Alice and Brian McGowan. This is a book to read during summertime so that you will be prepared to winter and grow plants during cold weather. By doing this gardeners can save money and transform annuals into perennials.

“Hardy Succulents: Tough Plants for Every Climate” by Gwen Moore Kelaidis. Photography by Saxon Holt. The American Horticultural Society gave this book their highest award. Succulents are one of my favorite types of plants for our climate. They survive on relatively little water and bring interesting variety and beautiful colors to a garden. The photography in this book is gorgeous.

“The Wedding Book: The Big book for Your Big Day” by Mindy Weiss with Lisbeth Levine. Anyone, planning a wedding, should be able to find an answer to their questions in this book. It is comprehensive and includes lists, schedules, budgeting tools and timelines.

“Your Beautiful Wedding On Any Budget” by Todd Outcalt. A pastor who has counseled hundreds of couples, Outcalt knows whereof he speaks. This book will help the new couple avoid the strain of an expensive wedding on their new marriage.

“Do It for Less! Weddings: How to Create Your Dream Wedding Without Breaking the Bank” by Denise Vivaldo. My father would have liked to have his daughters read this book before we got married. Vivaldo also wrote “Do-it-for-Less! Parties”. This is again another book which will show a young couple (and their parents) how to plan a wedding without breaking the bank.

“Your Skin, Younger: New Science Secrets to Naturally Younger Skin” by Alan C. Logan and others. Maybe, this gives me an alternative to a skin peel and face lift. According to the book jacket blurb, “Age-defiant skin is simple to achieve naturally. The secret lies in understanding how your diet and nutrition, food preparations, stress levels, and topical skin care can improve your skin.” Even for someone on the wrong side of 60? I hope so!

All these books are available at the Lied Scottsbluff Public Library.
