New DVD's - Bev Russell, Library Director

(This column appeared in the May 31, 2009, Star-Herald)

Videos are among the most popular items for checkout at the library. The popularity of circulating videos seems to have no limits. At present, the library circulates over 3,600 in both VHS and DVD formats. Truthfully, we could use twice that many videos if we had space for them. The plan is to double the collection when the library is expanded.

Video format is changing rapidly. We hope someday to be able to provide a downloadable video collection but do not have that available at this time. Like everything else, cost is the limiting factor. All of the VHS videos that we add are donated by patrons and are greatly appreciated. Donations save the library budget a considerable amount of money each year.

When we select videos, we follow the same criteria that we follow for books. Major emphasis is given to "how-to" videos, children’ entertainment, documentaries, and classic or award-winning feature films. We do no want to compete with video rental stores for the most recent, popular selections. Older television series are also popular. To be frank, cost is the major factor limiting what we can purchase for our video collection.

Videos may be borrowed for home use only and not for public performance. The exception to that is library "in house" use. The library has a signed movie license agreement which allows us to show certain videos for public performance at the library only and without charge.

Some new videos in the library collections include the following:

"Jane Eyre" - This production of Charlotte Bronte’s classic novel is a 1973 BBC television production.

"Little Dorritt" and "Oliver Twist"– These two Charles Dickens’ novels were presented on PBS Masterpiece Theatre this spring. Both are fabulous British productions.

"Sense and Sensibility" – This motion picture, based upon Jane Austen’s novel, starred Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant.

"Middlemarch" – An adaptation of George Eliot’s classic novel and another BBC production, it was filmed in England and Rome.

"WWII" – This two-disc set includes the "Weapons at War: The Fighting Leathernecks of WWII" and "Dead Men’s Secrets" The Secrets of the Sea Wolves."

"Conspiracy?" - This three-disc set was broadcast on the History Channel. It includes the following programs:

Finally, the library has added some older, favorite Hollywood movies on DVD -"Billy Jack", "Robocop", "Witness for the Prosecution" and "The Day the Earth Stood Still".
