DVD's Aid Honey-Do's - Bev Russell, Library Director

(This column appeared in the July 1, 2007, Star-Herald)

Here is a listing of more new home improvement or do-it-yourself DVDs at the Scottsbluff Public Library. I am planning on showing these to my husband. He’s retired now, and it’s my wifely duty to keep him busy with "honey-dos". At least, that’s how I see it.

"Building Decks with Scott Schuttner" – Shows how to build two decks; one simple, single-level deck, demonstrating the basic principles of construction; the other, a custom wrap-around deck, complete with benches, planters and built-in seating.

"Installing Kitchen Cabinets and Countertops" – Carpenter Tom Law transforms a bare farmhouse addition into a modern country kitchen, complete with floor-to-ceiling pantries and a large island counter.

"Making Kitchen Cabinets" – Explains how to build kitchen cabinets using a system that saves time, anticipates mistakes, and allows for corrections. Learn how to laminate plastic to plywood, cut tongue and groove joints, assemble cases, route dovetails for sturdy drawers, make doors, install self-closing hinges, and install smooth operating runners.

"Tiling Countertops with Michael Byrne" – Demonstrates techniques for tiling countertops. Presents an overview of basic procedures and shows how to solve problems.

"Tiling Floors" – Professional tile setter Michael Byrne works on a bathroom floor to demonstrate techniques for tiling any floor

"Tiling Walls with Michael Byrne" – Explains how to tile any wall, from layout to grouting.

Actually, I am not going to make Roger watch all these videos (Well, maybe the one on deck construction.), but they are available at the library for any budding carpenters or do-it-yourselfers. The library has books on these topics too. If you are anything like me, it helps a lot to have a technique or procedure demonstrated and explained in detail. If these do not help, try a book. If all else fails, hire a professional carpenter. If nothing else, he can fix what you messed-up.
