History DVDs - Bev Russell, Library Director
(This column appeared in the July 26, 2009, Star-Herald)
One of my favorite television channels is the History Channel. The documentaries, aired on this channel, are quality productions and factual for the most part. Occasionally, they drift into the realm of prophecy, speculation and myth as with the Nostradamus documentary. When I received a call recently about a special sale on 20 History Channel DVDs, I could not pass it up. I have not seen all of these programs and am looking forward to a chance to feed my History Channel addiction with them. Following is a list of these documentaries:
“Nostradamus: 2012 Hindsight is 20/20. Foresight is 2012.” This is not just about Norstradamus but also about 2012, which is the last year of the Mayan Calendar.
“China’s First Emperor.” Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of China, is credited with both unifying China and tormenting its citizenry and is one of the most controversial leaders. A book to read along with the video is “China's First Emperor and His Terracotta Warriors” by Frances Wood.
“Primal Fear: Our Deepest FEARS Revealed.” This documentary explores the
history, psychology and science behind what scares us most.
“The Great Depression.” Guess you all know what the Great Depression is. The narrator for this program is Mario Cuomo.
“Stealing Lincoln’s Body.” A band of Chicago counterfeiters hatched a plot to steal the President's body from its tomb outside Springfield, Illinois, and hold it for a ransom of $200,000.
“Einstein.” Presents the story of Albert Einstein and his fifteen-year battle to prove his Theory of General Relativity
“Women in the White House.” On two discs this documentary looks at the First Ladies and First Mothers of our presidents.
“The Templar Code.” Interviews some of the world's leading biblical scholars and visits historic sites throughout Europe and the Near East to probe the past of this mysterious order.
“Journey to 10,000 B.C.: The Real Story of Prehistoric Man’s Fight for Survival.”
This program visits early human archaeological sites and uses computer animation to explore the daily life of the first humans in North America.
“Life After People: Welcome to Earth Population: 0.” This fascinating documentary considers what the world will be like when human beings are extinct.
“Barack Obama: From His Childhood Years to His Historic Election.”
“The Real Tomb Hunters: Snakes, Curses and Booby Traps.” Adventurers and archaeologists journey to the ends of the Earth to uncover secrets of mysterious civilizations.
“Hunting Hitler.” Examines the events of July, 1944, when a party led by highly placed Nazi officers nearly killed their leader and also uncovers evidence of a top secret plot hatched in London to kill the Führer.
“A Global Warning? After 650 Million Years of Climate Change, Is Global Warming Simply a Naturally Occurring Phenomenon, or the Result of Human Activity?”
